About the Timber
The reclaimed pine used to make our cottage doors has been planked from antique beams and joists which have come from demolished Victorian buildings such as schools, churches and dwellings. All timber used is in excess of 100 years old.
Reclaimed timber has more character than new wood. Many boards contain small scars made by nails and bolts; shakes may also occur. These features are retained and are what give the doors their character.
Because our reclaimed pine is newly machined it will appear lighter in colour than you might expect antique pine to be. The wood will mellow naturally with the effect of light.
About the Construction
Traditionally made featuring staff beading on the front edge of each board, with three ledges attached which are screwed on from the rear with fine headed screws. The screw holes are backfilled giving a reclaimed look to the doors.
Standard construction is 20mm thick with 4-6 random width vertical planks and 3 ledges. Please see below for made to measure service if you require something different.
About the Finish
Cottage doors are supplied sanded so you can apply your choice of oil or wax to enhance the natural beauty of the grain. They are also suitable for painting. We sell ideal finishing products.
We recommend cottage doors should be hung using a pair of 16-18" T-hinges (depending on the door width). Hinges were traditionally attached to the face (see Aged Oak Door photo) with fixings into the ledge behind. If you are fixing hinges to the reverse side, fix to the vertical boards and not the ledges.
