About the Timber
Our cottage doors are constructed from Character grade English or European Oak. This has been carefully seasoned, kiln dried and sawn.
Newly sawn oak is a light brown colour which will darken quickly with the effect of light. If you are looking for a darker brown oak please refer to our ageing process below.
About the Construction
All cottage doors are handmade with a staff bead on each tongue and groove plank on the face and on the rear. Planks are 20mm thick. The ledges which are screwed and plugged to the planks are 175mm wide and 25mm thick, with chamfered edges. The door is finished with decorative rosehead nails on the face.
The standard construction is 4-5 random width boards, with three horizontal ledges
About the Finish
We recommend cottage doors should be hung using a pair of 18" T-hinges. Hinges were traditionally attached to the face (see Aged Oak Door photo) with fixings into the ledge behind. If you are fixing hinges to the reverse side, fix to the vertical boards and not the ledges.
Aged Doors
For customers requiring a darker oak and more period look we offer an excellent ageing process known as fuming. Colours produced by this process vary according to the natural tannins in the oak. Fumed doors look best after finishing with oil. Doors are supplied fumed and oiled ready for you to hang (see photos below)
