FITTING NEWLY MADE DOOR KNOBS OR DOOR HANDLES TO AN OLD LOCK OR LATCH

As we sell traditional, quality door furniture often for period properties we do get fitting issues where old locks and latches are fitted on doors. Old door locks and latches have imperial holes in them, newly made door knobs and door handles have metric spindles (8mm in the main).

When you come to fit your new door knobs or door handles you will find the 8mm spindle is just a tad larger than an old imperial one, so the new spindle will not fit in the hole. What we suggest is that you take a small file to the hole in the mortise latch or lock and file around all sides of the hole. Keep trying to fit the new spindle and file until you can fit it! This does not take much filing, the difference is very slight.

All the rim locks, door latches and locks we sell have an 8mm hole so all door knobs and handles are compatible.

Hope this helps. Any further issues with fitting door knobs and door handles please get in touch.
